A Brief History
Since 1825, even before Sidney was an organized village, people have been worshipping at the First Presbyterian Church. We are proud of our history, that ours was the first organized church in Sidney, where people of faith met to worship God in a log building that served as the Shelby county seat, courthouse, jail, and even "the church."

The first building for the First Presbyterian Church, was built in 1834. We are now in the third building the congregation has built on this site in downtown Sidney. Our history is one of a congregation reaching out to those in need in times of community and personal crisis, and faithfully preaching and presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ. Organization and Structure
The First Presbyterian Church of Sidney, Ohio is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. (PCUSA). Click here for more information about Presbyterian Church USA. We are one of forty-some churches in the Presbytery of the Miami Valley, composed of more than 14,000 congregants in southwestern Ohio. The Miami Presbytery is one of eleven presbyteries organized as part of the Synod of the Covenant which includes 700-some congregations in Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Kentucky.

The constitution of the PCUSA states that all ministry in the church is a gift from Jesus Christ under whose authority members and officers serve mutually. Each one of us has a role in living lives of faith, called and sent into the world as witnesses to and agents of God's saving love in Jesus Christ our Lord.

A responsibility of membership in the church is the election of officers who are ordained to fulfill particular functions. These are called and ordained into service in the offices of Minister of the Word and Sacrament, Elders, and Deacons.

Membership in the First Presbyterian Church The First Presbyterian Church of Sidney, Ohio is a community of faith with Jesus Christ at the center. First Presbyterian Church is her people who are committed to life together in our Lord Jesus Christ, giving and sharing of themselves to the life and ministry of the church – The Body of Christ.
We believe that membership is through faith in Jesus Christ and acceptance of his Lordship in all of life. Some have attended First Presbyterian Church with their families, or individually, for all their life. Some come as visitors or guests. In any case, people enter into active membership in a Presbyterian church by: profession of faith, reaffirmation of faith or transfer from another church.
After acknowledging a calling or invitation to the life and ministry of First Church, a prospective member will meet with the Pastor and Elders to be received as a member. New members will be introduced to the congregation during worship.
There are three questions that are asked of those joining the First Presbyterian Church.
1. Do you trust in Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior?
2. Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you renounce the ways of sin and the power of evil in the world?
3. Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his word and showing his love?
If you are interested in learning more about membership in the First Presbyterian Chuch, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders.

Baptism
In Baptism, we participate in Jesus' death and resurrection; we die to what seperates us from God and are raised to newness of life in Christ. Baptism points us back to the grace of God expressed in Jesus Christ, who died fo us and who was raised for us. Baptism points us forward to that same Christ who will fulfill God's purpose in his promised future.
First Presbyterian Church celebrates the sacrament of Baptism several times a year. Both believers and their children are included in God's redeeming grace offered to all people. The Baptism of children witnessess to the truth that God's love claims people before they are able to respond in faith. The Baptism of those who enter the covenant upon their own profession of faith witnesses to the truth that God's gift of grace calls for fulfillment in a response of faithfulness.
If you or your child have not been baptized and you feel God's call, contact the pastor. She will guide you through the process, instructing you in the Sacrament's meaning and your responsibility to the church and God. After authorization by the Session, a date is chosen, and the congregation will celebrate this special day with you.
